Why is wildness mythic?

From the book:

Some people fill their houses with photos, images ans symbols of an animal or plant that has a special meaning for htem.  When the United States Congress passed the Wilderness Act in 1964, they affirmed the definition of wilderness as an area where he earth and its community of life are untrammeled by man, where man himself is a visitor who does not remain.  The wilderness was considered to be a dark and sinister place, without physical or spiritual comfort.  To civilize the wilderness meant bringing light to darkness, order to chaos and moral values to the lawless waste.
